Gridnorth

Gridnorth

Gridnorth is a framework for standards-based tactical messaging. It sits between the operator and the radio. It converts voice, chat and free text into validated military messages and prepares them for bandwidth-constrained links.

Purpose

Formal messages such as situation reports, requests for information and medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) requests follow strict formats. Operators produce them by hand, often under pressure, from spoken or informal input. Legacy systems handle machine-to-machine exchange poorly, while NATO and allied forces are moving to XML-based, machine-readable messaging. COIE vs MTF-XML covers that transition.

Functional stages

  1. Input

Speech and text, in English or French, processed on the device.

  2. Extraction

A small language model fills the fields of a typed message record. It can only produce values that the schema allows. See constrained decoding.

  3. Verification

Each field has a confidence score. Low-confidence and missing fields go to the operator. See calibrated abstention.

  4. Rendering

Deterministic code, not the model, writes the message in Message Text Format in XML (MTF-XML), in Character-Oriented Information Exchange (COIE) format and in the National Information Exchange Model (NIEM), and validates it before release.

  5. Encoding and delivery

Schema-informed EXI compacts the message for High Frequency (HF), Ultra High Frequency (UHF), satellite communications (SATCOM) and lower-rate bearers, with prioritization and store-and-forward.

Implementations and modules

The framework defines the stages above and the rules each must meet. An implementation supplies the platform and radio integration around them. PA-KDNC, the Rasembli Research tactical data exchange programme, is the first implementation. The field modules include the Recon Module, which extracts grid references from photographs on the device.

Exclusions

Gridnorth is not a radio, a waveform or a cloud service. It does not replace the operator. It removes the formatting work and asks for confirmation where it is uncertain.

Status

Gridnorth is at Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 3: each critical function has been demonstrated in the laboratory with representative data. Integrated laboratory validation (TRL 4) is the next stage. It is not fielded and is not approved for operational use. Read the evaluation.
