Resilient Tactical Data Exchange for Contested Environments.

Rasembli Research is developing low-footprint, software-defined communications architecture that sustains situational awareness when the network is denied, degraded, intermittent or limited.

01 · Operational Challenge

Built for the Edge of the Network.

Tactical communications fail where they are needed most — at the last tactical mile, under pressure, against a capable adversary.

  1. 01

    The DDIL Reality

Modern operations face severe electromagnetic spectrum interference, heavy electronic warfare (EW) jamming, and constrained bandwidth. Denied, Degraded, Intermittent and Limited conditions are the operating baseline — not the exception.

  2. 02

    The Voice Bottleneck

Unstructured voice and heavy IP overhead create long transmission windows, exposing tactical units to enemy direction-finding sensors. Time on air is a survivability problem before it is a bandwidth problem.

  3. 03

    Interoperability Gaps

Fragmented legacy hardware often prevents seamless cross-domain data sharing between dismounted elements and command posts, stranding critical reporting inside incompatible radio families.

02 · PA-KDNC Architecture

Intelligent, Compact, Stealthy.

A three-stage pipeline that converts spoken field reporting into structured, minimal-airtime transmissions — processed at the point of origin, transmitted to survive.

Intelligent // Compact // Stealthy

Stage 01

Semantic Edge Processing

Small language models running on the device convert spoken field reporting into structured, catalogue-conformant messages at the point of origin — no reachback, no cloud dependency.

Stage 02

High-Ratio Compaction

Structured reports are encoded into ultra-short 16-byte binary frames. The optimization target is time on air — the interval a transmitter is observable — rather than raw throughput.

Stage 03

Resilient Waveform Dynamics

Transmissions are distributed across multi-dimensional micro-bursts, trading contiguous airtime for a lower probability of intercept and detection under active jamming.

03 · Design Constraints

What we are solving for.

Every gain in this problem space is paid for somewhere else. These are the tensions the architecture has to answer.

Fidelity against airtime

Extraction is a decision about what not to transmit. A report reduced to its load-bearing elements has lost something, so what was extracted has to remain inspectable by the operator who owns the report.

Tension · compression vs. meaning

Inference against power

A model small enough to run on dismounted kit shares a battery and a thermal envelope with the radio it feeds. Model size is bounded by what can be carried and cooled, not by accuracy alone.

Tension · capability vs. carried weight

Compaction against conformance

The most compact encoding of a message is always a private one. Conforming to a published catalogue costs bits a proprietary scheme would not spend — a cost worth paying, because a report has value only where it can be read.

Tension · efficiency vs. interoperability

Concealment against assurance

Energy dispersed to lower the probability of intercept is also energy that is harder to acknowledge. Retransmission strategy in this regime is a survivability question before it is a networking one.

Tension · signature vs. delivery

04 · Interoperability

Built against published standards.

PA-KDNC is additive to the fielded ecosystem. Reporting leaves the edge in formats the alliance already parses and arrives in the tools already on the operator’s screen.

The rules, constructions and vocabulary of the NATO Message Text Formatting System (FORMETS). Since 2008 an ADatP-3 message may be carried either slash-delimited or as XML, with a one-to-one mapping between the two — the slash-delimited representation retained specifically for its bandwidth advantage. PA-KDNC optimizes along that same axis and continues past it.

The Allied Procedural Publication that catalogues the NATO message set — on the order of 400 messages, each conforming to ADatP-3 construction rules. Structured output from the edge targets this catalogue rather than a private schema.

Cursor on Target

MITRE (opens in a new tab)

An XML event carrying uid, type, time, start, stale and how, where type is a hierarchical taxonomy and the detail element is deliberately extensible. That extensibility is the integration point for compacted reporting.

ATAK, WinTAK and iTAK are where a dismounted operator actually reads the picture. Delivery targets the client already fielded rather than asking a unit to adopt a new one.

Link 16 · J-series

Designator to be confirmed

Translation toward the J-series message set carried on Link 16, so reporting structured at the edge can reach tactical data link participants rather than stopping at the radio net it originated on.

Legacy HF / VHF

No public specification

Analog bearers remain in service across coalition and partner formations. On the timelines units actually operate on, a gateway path matters more than bearer modernization.
