Gridnorth

Standards-based tactical messaging, verified before release.

Gridnorth is a framework for producing formal military messages for Command and Control (C2) systems from voice, chat and free text. Each field is checked before release, and the result is encoded to fit narrow radio links. It works in English and French, and it is designed to run on the operator's own device with no network connection.

How it worksRead the evaluation

The problem

Operators convert radio calls, chat and notes into formal reports by hand. The process is slow, it introduces errors, and the product is rarely machine-readable. Gridnorth performs the conversion in software, on the operator's device, and returns control to the operator at the point of release.

What Gridnorth does

01

Structure is guaranteed

The language model can only fill the fields that the message schema defines. In the laboratory evaluation, 100% of records were structurally valid. The same model without the constraint produced 60.8%. The accuracy of the values is measured separately: 84.4% of fields overall.

02

Doubt is reported

Every field carries a confidence score. Fields the system is unsure of go back to the operator for confirmation and are not released. In testing, 15.3% of fields were flagged, and the flags caught 64.4% of errors.

03

Messages fit the link

Messages are encoded with schema-informed Efficient XML Interchange (EXI), a W3C standard. Mean message size fell from 328 bytes as plain-text Extensible Markup Language (XML) to 19 bytes. Every message decoded without loss.

Status

Gridnorth is at Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 3: proof of concept demonstrated in the laboratory on representative data. Integrated laboratory validation (TRL 4) is the next stage. All test inputs were text. Speech from real speakers has not been tested. The evaluation reports open items beside the results.

Implementations

Gridnorth is a framework. An implementation supplies the platform and the radio integration around it. PA-KDNC, the Rasembli Research programme for over-the-air trials, is the first.

Canadian, bilingual, open about limits

Rasembli Research is a Canadian company. Gridnorth is designed in English and French from the first line of code. We publish how we test it and where it falls short. Evaluators should read the open items on the evaluation page first.
